Opening Keynote: Jamil Zainaldin, President, Georgia Humanities Council
Dr. Jamil S. Zainaldin is President of the Georgia Humanities Council and former president of the Washington-based Federation of State Humanities Councils. Since 1999 he has spearheaded the development of an electronic state encyclopedia (The New Georgia Encyclopedia), a GHC project in partnership with the Office of the Governor, the University of Georgia Press and the University System of Georgia/GALILEO. The Georgia online encyclopedia is a pioneering effort that has been recognized by the NEH, the New York Times, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and USA Today. It became available on the World Wide Web in February 2004 and was named by the Library Journal as a “Best Reference Source on the Web” for that year. At present he is involved in an effort to create a Georgia State History Museum.
The Humanities in a ‘Brave’ (?) New World
Zainaldin will talk about some of the changes in communications and the World Wide Web and the implications of this for the Humanities – and the new relevance of the Humanities.

Colleen Jennings-Roggensack is Executive Director for Arizona State University Gammage with artistic, fiscal and administrative responsibility since 1992 and has been presenting the performing arts for 29 years. Her numerous professional achievements include: Board of Governors for The Broadway League, former Presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts, former President of Association for Performing Arts Presenters, Creative Capital Board member and Board member and former chair of Tempe Convention & Visitors Bureau. Serves as a consultant to several international governments.

Lee Farabaugh
Lee is Director of User Experience for Point Clear Solutions. Her role involves developing and growing the usability practice and participating in usability projects, involving information architecture, interface design, and usability research and testing. Lee holds Master of Science in Human-Computer Interaction from Georgia Tech. Lee was a Web Site Producer for Lipman Hearn, Inc., a marketing agency serving the non-profit sector. PointClear’s client list includes Regions Bank, Vulcan Materials, CapMed, and Open Biosystems among others.
Scott Schablow
As the new Web Strategist for Interactive Arts & Sciences, and recently as the VP of Interactive Marketing for Luckie & Company, Scott Schablow has spearheaded the development of Web sites, widgets, blogs and online media for 10 years. Under his leadership Scott's teams have created successful, award-winning work for such brands as AT&T, Regions Bank, Bayer Advanced, McKee Foods (Little Debbie and Sunbelt) and BlueCross BlueShield. With a keen ability to identify emerging trends, Scott has been on the forefront of the rapid evolution of social media marketing and will show you how your organization can begin to benefit from this new media.

Ronald's online fundraising service, 4aGoodCause.com has generated millions of dollars for charity since its inception in 2001. Ronald holds an MBA from Auburn University and is proud to have assisted organizations such as Nonprofit Resource Center of Alabama, Birmingham Zoo, Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America in developing and building their e-commerce strategies.

Toby Graham
Dr. Patterson Toby Graham is Director of the Digital Library of Georgia, which partners with libraries and allied organizations to provide online access to key collections on Georgia history and life. Based at the University of Georgia, the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) is an initiative of GALILEO, Georgia's virtual library. Graham is co-director of the recently launched Civil Rights Digital Library and oversees production for the Georgia HomePLACE digitization partnership, Georgia Government Publications digital initiative, and the Georgia Newspaper Project. He authored A Right to Read: Segregation & Civil Rights in Alabama’s Public Libraries, 1900-1965 and serves on the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board and University of Georgia Press Editorial Board. He earned his Ph.D. in library and information studies, M.L.S., and M.A. in history at the University of Alabama.
Civil Rights Digital Library
Delivering a news film archive and related historical materials from 90 educational institutions across the U.S., the Civil Rights Digital Library is the most ambitious and comprehensive initiative to date to deliver educational content on the Civil Rights Movement via the Web. The CRDL is a cross-disciplinary collaboration, including librarians, archivists, humanities scholars, university students, publishers, educators, and information technologists.

Laurie Bonnici
Dr. Bonnici is Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama, College of Communication and Information Sciences. Her research is focused in two areas: social disconnects in information technology user support and information technology design and application for efficient and effective information access. Specific investigation is in the area of accessibility and the application of universal design approaches; a subset of human-computer interaction. Dr. Bonnici's major teaching interests include information technology, change management, as well as Web, database, and systems design and development.
Speaking Across the Generations
The humanities impact people from all walks of life, ages, and interests. How do we address audiences of such diverse people with limited resources, space, and budgets? A key foundational approach is to understand the perspectives of these populations as they relate to information technology applications and use. Through a discussion of generational dynamics, the presenter will relate generational attitudes and outlooks with current technologies for selection of technology and media for e-marketing, development, education, and social networking.

Michael Merrill
A founder of Merrill-Hall New Media, Mike Merrill taught literature and writing at UCLA and Georgia Tech. He led one of the nation’s first humanities classes combining cultural studies and Internet programming. Merrill has consulted with Turner Learning to develop a system that nightly builds custom pages for CNN Newsroom. He has managed many projects for Merrill-Hall, most notably the New Georgia Encyclopedia, and contributed to the development of the Teacher component of Encyclopedia of Alabama. He holds a B.A. in American and English Literature from Brown University and a Ph.D. in English Literature from UCLA.
Reinventing the Internet for the Humanities
Merrill will explore cutting edge technologies that are reinventing the Internet as an educational resource. Merrill-Hall developed the encyclopedia platform and publishing tool for the New Georgia Encyclopedia and contributed to Encyclopedia of Alabama. Merrill-Hall provides expertise in backend database development and programming, recently recognized for XML.

DEVELOPMENT
George Freeman
Over the past 28 years, George Freeman has held numerous responsibilities in non-profit fundraising and served as Director of Development and Annual Funds for non-profits in Alabama, Arkansas, Texas and Oregon. In 1986 he was named Director of Development for Auburn University’s College of Engineering. In 1992 George became Director of University Development and was campaign manager for Campaign Auburn: The Next Generation with a $169 million goal. In 1995 George became Executive Assistant to the President and Executive Director for the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind Foundation. He has most recently served as Director, Atlanta Area Development Office for Georgia Southern University.

Corporate America has clearly laid the roadmap for the use of technology to streamline operations, maximize performance and reduce costs. This presentation examines how technology can increase capacity, improve training methods and generate additional audiences for the advancement of the agency mission.
