Robert Stewart, executive director, Alabama Humanities Foundation
Stewart has served as AHF Executive Director since 1987. A native of Tuscaloosa, he received a B.A. in English from Amherst College, M.A. in American Studies from Boston University, and M.B.A. from Emory University. He previously held professional positions at the Huntsville Museum of Art, Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, Birmingham Museum of Art and Old Sturbridge Village. He received the 1996 Virginia Hamilton Prize from the Alabama Historical Association for his contributions to the promotion of Alabama history. He directed a statewide program on the landscape in Alabama photography and literature, which received the 1990 Schwartz Prize for humanities programs from the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Under his leadership, and in partnership with Auburn University, AHF led a statewide effort of academic and cultural organizations to create the online Encyclopedia of Alabama , which Governor Riley publicly launched in September 2008.
