Daniel Spector, Ph.D., U.S. Army Chemical Corps Historian, retired; and independent scholar
Spector is a native of Florida who grew up in Eastern Tennessee and attended the George Washington University, graduating with a B.A. in political science in 1963. After a year in graduate school at the University of Florida, he joined the Federal Civil Service and served in various personnel and management analyst positions in Texas, Oklahoma, Vietnam and Germany. In 1971, he returned to graduate school at the University of Texas, receiving his Ph.D. in history in 1975. His field of concentration was Middle Eastern history, and his dissertation topic was “A History of the Persian Jews.” He resumed his civil service career with the Army at Fort McClellan, serving as an education specialist for the Military Police and Chemical Schools. His last assignment before retiring in 1994 was as historian for the U.S. Army Chemical Corps. Before and after retirement, he taught a variety of history courses at UAB, and was later on the adjunct faculty of Troy State University, teaching TSU students via the Internet all over the world. He is a member of several professional associations, has published numerous articles and book reviews in various journals, is the author of about 30 articles in the Encyclopedia of the Modern Middle East, some of which he has updated for a new edition. Spector is currently working on several articles for an Encyclopedia of the Cold War.
