Bertis English, Ph.D., associate professor of history at Alabama State University, is the first African American to earn a doctorate in history from Auburn University. He specializes in the history of the United States, especially the South and African Americans, and also holds a baccalaureate degree in English. English has studied abroad and has taught English and history courses at several colleges and universities in Alabama.
