Stories and Conversations: The Humanities and Public Life in Alabama

Presented by Robert Stewart, executive director, Alabama Humanities Foundation

**This is a complimentary presentation.

As the state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Alabama Humanities Foundation often relies on the traditional list of humanities disciplines to define its mission: history, literature, philosophy, ethics, languages, archaeology and art history and criticism. But another way of defining the humanities is to describe why they are important to us. The humanities are those fields of study that help us understand what it means to be human in today's world. They give us wisdom as individuals and a sense of community as a people. The humanities don't provide easy answers of right and wrong but they help us ask the right questions and clarify the actual choices facing us. This presentation will focus on how the stories we tell each other, and the conversations we have about the world around us, draw upon our understanding of history, literature and other fields of study. By highlighting sample AHF-sponsored projects and programs, the presentation will reveal how the organization is making a difference in the lives of all Alabamians and will inspire audiences to explore their own stories.

A screen is preferred but the presentation can be delivered without A/V. The scholar can provide a laptop and digital projector.
