The Alabama Humanities Foundation in partnership with Motheread will continue to provide the My United States training as funding allows. This Motheread training is a perfect fit for AHF’s continued quest to provide grassroots humanities programming for the citizen’s of Alabama. The My United States training is a civics and government program that focuses on ESL learners and GED students. The My United States curriculum helps students develop a personal perspective and context for learning about history, government, and community life. The curriculum is based on the requirements of the U.S. Citizenship Test and all of the lessons have been correlated with CASAS competencies. This two-day interactive training combines individual assignments, small group work, lecture and discussion and is open to all non-profit organizations in Alabama.

The My United States training uses multi-cultural children’s literature to help connect simple books to complex subjects. Training topics include how to integrate civics education into a literacy course, creative ways to help motivate students to learn the information required to pass the U.S. Citizenship Test, and how to use related resources and support materials. Some of the curriculum topics include an introduction to civics, the role of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, recent American history, and the naturalization process. Motheread has developed a compelling approach to help a diverse student population to meet individual and academic needs.

If you are interested in learning more about the My United States training please contact Tara Holman, Motheread Development Director of the Gulf Region at 334-794-3446 or e-mail at taraholman@aol.com. With the continued support from AHF, Alabama non-profits can reach our growing ESL population, work with adult students and provide a relevant history experience for both.

My United States is a Program of MOTHEREAD
Motheread, operating in schools, prisons, and community settings in eighteen states and the Virgin Islands, offers adults the opportunity to improve their family lives through a means often taken for granted- reading. Classes bring parents together with specially trained teachers to read and talk about the images and ideas conveyed in children’s stories. After these classes, parents are prepared to read the books to their children and discuss with them the issues raised. Parents become better role models and children become better readers.

Partner Agencies
Motheread’s effectiveness is due in part to the partnership with organizations already skilled in delivering services to parents and children. Classes are generally based in partner agencies concerned with education and parenting, such as: Head Start, Even Start, and Title I programs; school districts; neighborhood centers; community colleges; social service agencies; tribal communities; literacy programs; correctional facilities; and libraries. Partner agencies provide instructors, class sites, and recruitment of parents.
