The Encyclopedia of Alabama is a comprehensive online reference on our state’s history, culture, geography, and natural environment. It celebrates both the famous and little-known treasures through more than 500 posted articles written by leading scholars and experts. It’s an interactive, multimedia tool that includes audio and video clips and an impressive collection of graphics and images that tell the story of Alabama’s people and places. At this year’s luncheon, Alabama Governor Bob Riley will join the Alabama Humanities Foundation to launch the Encyclopedia of Alabama online. Gov. Riley has made education a priority through the Alabama Reading Initiative and the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative. Join us on September 15, as we launch the Encyclopedia of Alabama, and bring this important resource into our state’s classrooms and homes.

2008 Alabama Humanities Award Recipient
Senator Richard C. Shelby
Alabama Senator Richard Shelby has tirelessly worked to obtain funding to help support programs that make a difference in the humanities in Alabama. He played an integral role in securing funds for the restoration of Vulcan, the world’s largest cast iron statue, located in Birmingham. In 2005 Senator Shelby secured a generous grant from the Small Business Administration for the Encyclopedia of Alabama, helping the site grow its staff, and expand the site’s content and capabilities. He has also helped provide funding for the continued growth of the Alabama Department of Archives and History. Senator Shelby, a proponent of education in Alabama, has supported the construction of new facilities and building projects for the University of Alabama, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Auburn University.
