Artist’s statement: Caleb O’Connor painted the portrait of Charles over a cup of coffee. Charles is a homeless man who shared his life story with O’Connor and became his friend. O’Connor has relocated to Tuscaloosa, Ala., in order to complete 16 large-scale mural paintings for the new U.S. Federal Courthouse being built. This three-year project will depict the history of Tuscaloosa and Alabama. He is artist-in-residence at the University of Alabama.
