Monroe County Courthouse
Wesley Higgins • LEGO® brick
Artist’s statement: The Monroe County Courthouse is the courthouse in Harper Lee’s
hometown of Monroeville, Ala. Built in 1903, this courthouse was the primary
location where her father, Amasa Coleman Lee, practiced law, and it was the
inspiration for the courthouse in her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. In 1962, a
movie adaptation of the book was filmed. Since the courthouse was in use for trials,
pictures and measurements were taken so that the set designers could recreate the
courtroom at Universal Studios in California. Today, the Monroe County Courthouse
is the location of an annual play adapted from the book. This year is the 20th
anniversary of the play. The beautiful and stately architecture and the turn-of-thecentury
design inspired the artist to recreate the main courtroom building, domed
clock tower and interior in LEGO®.
