Songbird
Beverly Erdreich • Mixed media on Arches paper

Artist’s statement: “Just as a Mockingbird can imitate over 30 songs, Harper Lee’s book can be read on many different levels. Therefore, I wanted to depict a complex and multiple image of many mockingbirds—the feet of a single bird tied down or imprisoned and then an image to symbolize how only a free bird can sing. Of course this can also be read as a metaphor for freedom on a larger scale.”
