Artist’s statement: “This photograph is the old Christenberry home place near Stewart in Hale County, Ala. Most of my art is devoted to images of Hale and surrounding counties in the Black Belt. To Kill a Mockingbird was very important to me, as it was published around the same time I began depicting our region. Soon thereafter, I zeroed in on the rural Black Belt, and it has been the focus of my work ever since. AHF used this image for its 20 th anniversary poster in 1994.”
