The Alabama Humanities Foundation was thrilled to honor Elaine Hughes with the 2011 Alabama Humanities Award and Wells Fargo with the 2011 Charitable Organization in the Humanities Award.
Our outstanding keynote speaker was Gen. Charles C. Krulak, the 13th president of Birmingham-Southern College. Gen. Krulak is a retired commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps and former member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He joins a long list of outstanding speakers who have appeared at the event including Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, Pulitzer prize-winning writers Rick Bragg and Cynthia Tucker, journalist Charles Kuralt, historian Douglas Brinkley, best-selling authors Sena Naslund and Warren St. John, U.S. Sen. Howell Heflin and Lynne Cheney. Jan Crawford, the chief legal correspondent for CBS News, spoke at the 2010 event.
About Gen. Charles C. Krulak
General Krulak served 35 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. His last position was as Commandant of the Marine Corps and as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He commanded a platoon and two rifle companies during two tours of duty in Vietnam and then held a variety of command and staff positions. These included deputy director of the White House Military Office, Commanding General, 6th Marine Expeditionary Brigade during Desert Storm, Commanding General, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, and Commanding General, Marine Forces Pacific. During his military service, General Krulak was awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” and two gold stars, the Purple Heart with gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the French Legion d’Honneur Commandeur rank, and many other decorations and medals.
Upon his retirement from the Marine Corps, General Krulak joined MBNA America Bank as Vice Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer and subsequently as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MBNA Europe Bank, Ltd. After four years in this position, he returned to the United States and served as Vice Chairman, MBNA America Bank as Head of Corporate Development, Mergers and Acquisitions. General Krulak retired from MBNA in June 2005.
Today, General Krulak is the President for Birmingham-Southern College, a liberal arts college located in Birmingham. In addition, General Krulak currently sits on the Board of Directors of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Corporation where he is a member of the Public Policy and Personnel Committees and the Board of Directors of Union Pacific Railroad Corporation where he is a member of the Finance and Audit Committees. He sits on the Board of Regents forthe Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He sits on the Board of the CEO Forum and serves as Director with Aston Villa Football Club in the United Kingdom. He is an advisor to the Center for Naval Analysis and Human Rights First. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
General Krulak is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and has a master’s degree in labor relations from George Washington University.

About Alabama Humanities Award Winner Elaine Hughes
Elaine Hughesx
has been an active and acclaimed champion of the humanities throughout her personal life, professional service, and
almost four decades at the University of Montevallo as a professor of American literature with a specialty in Southern and contemporary literature. She served on the AHF Board of Directors for six years, including two years as the board chair.
Hughes’s effectiveness in promoting the humanities has been recognized by regional and national awards. She was the 2007 recipient of the Eugene Current-Garcia Distinguished Scholar Award, and in 1998-1999 she received the Carnegie Foundation CASE Professor of the Year Award for Alabama. Both our state and the nation have recognized that Hughes has had an enormous direct impact on elevating public awareness of and interest in the humanities. Hughes has dedicated her life, expertise and extraordinary energy to being a visionary champion of the humanities. Past honorees at the luncheon have included Senator Richard Shelby, Red Blount, Harper Lee, Senator Howell Heflin, Emory Cunningham and Jack Warner.

Jenice Riley Memorial Scholarships
Also presented during the luncheon were individual scholarships in memory of Jenice Riley, the late daughter of Governor Bob and Patsy
Riley. The $1,000 awards are given to teachers to enhance their teaching abilities by purchasing classroom materials for a special project, offering a class field trip or attending a seminar or institute in the subject areas of history and civics.
