Executive Director Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for managing the daily operations as well as guiding the implementation of the vision of the AHF. The position requires superior interpersonal and communication skills, especially as it relates to maintaining informal and positive relationships. Subject to the policies and guidelines established by the AHF and the National Endowment for the Humanities [NEH], the Executive Director is responsible for seeing that the activities of the AHF are carried out effectively. The Executive Director is responsible for supervising the staff in an environment that fosters teamwork, planning and professional development. The Executive Director reports directly to the Chair and Executive Committee of the AHF Board of Directors.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Administrative and Financial
- Oversees the planning, development and implementation of AHF policies, operations, and programs
- Collaborates with Finance Committee and appropriate staff to develop annual organizational budget
- Oversees financial management and fiscal planning
- Supervises the preparation of required fiscal reports and forms for the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Internal Revenue Service
- Maintains required and appropriate record-keeping and reporting systems
- Hires, supervises, and evaluates all staff, promotes professional development, and maintains an effective working environment
- Plans and conducts staff meetings, retreats, and other staff activities
- Proposes staff salaries and benefits to board
- Oversees the preparation of guidelines, instructions, and supportive materials to stimulate the submission of grant applications to the AHF
- Works closely with the AHF Board of Directors
- Serves as the liaison between board and staff
- Other duties as assigned by Board of Directors
Fund Development
- Works directly with the staff and the Development and PR Committees to design and implement a fundraising plan
- Works directly with the staff and board to promote AHF programs and financial resources
- Works directly with staff and board to identify non-federal resources, including private and state funds
- Oversees and works closely with staff and board to plan and implement fundraising events
- Remains updated on the AHF's investment programs and ensures board members remain informed
- Participates in the evaluation of fundraising efforts
Communication and Relationship-Building
- Increases the visibility, public perception, and public awareness of all aspects of the AHF mission, goals, activities, and achievements
- Develops relationships with current and potential partner organizations, and humanities-oriented constituencies
- Represents the AHF and its work to a broad range of organizations, institutions, and constituent groups throughout the state in concert with AHF board and volunteers
- Works directly with Government Relations Committee to coordinate effective communication with state legislators, Alabama Congressional delegation and other elected officials
- Works cooperatively with the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the National Endowment for the Humanities
QUALIFICATIONS
- Passion for the humanities, and personal values consistent with AHF’s mission
- Bachelor’s Degree required. Masters Degree or higher preferred.
- Five years proven experience in a managerial or professional capacity
- Experience with nonprofit boards and organizations, including strategic management, fiscal planning, and fundraising
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to speak, write, and design messages in various formats for different audiences
- Strong organizational and administrative skills
- Strong small group management skills
- Demonstrated experience with fostering partnerships and building constituencies
- Experience with development, marketing, and public relations
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with and build relationships with a diverse constituency
- Highly-organized and able to meet strict deadlines
- Willingness to travel
COMPENSATION
This full-time position offers an attractive compensation and benefits package, consistent with that of organizations similar in size, scope, scale, and geographic location. Salary commensurate with responsibilities and experience.
